Kyle Mars Courtnall
Mr. Courtnall has been practicing law for over 10 years. For approximately five of those years he was a Virginia state prosecutor, including a stint in one of the largest prosecutor's offices in Virginia. During his five years as a prosecutor, Mr. Courtnall was considered a sworn law enforcement officer and he was also a Police Academy Instructor. He taught future police officers and sheriff's deputies such topics as laws of arrest, handling of evidence, crime scene investigation, juvenile and domestic relations law, and trial advocacy skills. Mr. Courtnall also assisted with field training of new law enforcement officers, and evaluation of experienced officers, via frequent "ride-alongs." Mr. Courtnall witnessed firsthand, and often participated in, literally hundreds of traffic stops, arrests, and crime scene searches/investigations. Mr. Courtnall was also one of the only prosecutors authorized to officially ride in the Virginia Beach Police Department's patrol helicopters. During his time as a prosecutor, Mr. Courtnall handled virtually every type of criminal case, up to and including murder. Mr. Courtnall also attended numerous training sessions and seminars sponsored by the Virginia Association of Commonwealth's Attorneys, where he learned the latest and best trial techniques from Virginia's top prosecutors. Mr. Courtnall also attended Virginia's prestigious, specialized training for narcotics prosecutions ("Top Gun" school) and murder prosecutions ("Homicide School"). Mr. Courtnall also attended several seminars sponsored by the National Association of District Attorneys in Columbia, South Carolina. Mr. Courtnall was formerly a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Mr. Courtnall also served as an Assistant Public Defender, and he assisted with the opening of a brand new Public Defender's Office in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, where he was responsible for training and evaluating new attorneys. Mr. Courtnall also served as a judicial law clerk on the Fairfax County Circuit Court, where he gained valuable insight into the inner workings of the largest and busiest trial court in Virginia. Mr. Courtnall has been in private practice for several years, where he has continued to serve his clients with excellence and zeal. He has successfully handled thousands of traffic cases, from misdemeanors such as Reckless Driving and Driving While Intoxicated, to serious felonies such as Hit-and-Run and Eluding a Law Enforcement Officer. Mr. Courtnall has participated in over 100 jury trials, as both a prosecutor and defense attorney.
Mr. Courtnall has been interviewed by and quoted in numerous media outlets in the Washington, D.C. area concerning traffic and criminal law matters, including the Washington Post, Washington Times, NBC 4 News, ABC 7 News, Fox 5 News, and WTOP news radio. Mr. Courtnall has also appeared on CNN, where he was interviewed live in 2007 regarding the constitutionality of a newly enacted Reckless Driving statute in Virginia. Mr. Courtnall's clients have included fellow attorneys, physicians, clergymen, police officers and federal law enforcement agents, high-ranking military officers and Pentagon officials, the son of a Member of Congress, a member of the U.S. summer Olympic team, and even a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Mr. Courtnall is a lifelong resident of Virginia and a native of Fairfax County. Prior to beginning his career as an attorney, he proudly worked for United Parcel Service for nearly 10 years. Mr. Courtnall earned his bachelor's degree with honors from Georgetown University. He earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was active in the Career Services and Alumni Associations. Mr. Courtnall currently serves on both the General District Court Committee and the Circuit Court Committee of the Fairfax Bar Association. Mr. Courtnall is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
